If you’re being followed, you may be confused, scared, and nervous. Continue reading to learn what you should do if you suspect someone is stalking you on the road.
Steps to Take
If you suspect someone is following you while you’re driving, you should do the following:
Don’t panic - Do your best to remain calm. In situations like this, the last thing you want to do is make rash decisions. Stay calm in order to prevent yourself from making hasty choices. If your doors aren’t locked already, be sure to lock them. Don’t focus all your attention in your rear-view mirror as this can distract you from the road ahead and cause you to make mistakes.
Don’t change your speed - Even if you’re trained in pursuit by the police, you shouldn’t try to out-run a stalker. Your best option is to continue driving as if no one were following you. Most of the time, when we think someone is following us, they actually aren’t.
Disregard their hazard lights - If the car following you turns on their hazard lights, pay no mind. Be cautious of what’s happening around you and check to make sure you have your headlights on (if applicable), but don’t do anything to immediately change your behavior.
Go to a safe place - If you’re nearly sure the car behind you is stalking you, you’ll need to seek a place of refuge. A good place to go is an active police station. This will typically cause the stalker to flee. If the stalker does not flee, pull onto the forecourt, remain in your vehicle, and lay on the horn until people are paying attention. At that point, your stalker should drive away.
