Two weeks before the start of a week-long jury trial, we negotiated a $5.6 million settlement for the family of a husband and father who tragically died after being struck by a runaway truck. This settlement ranks among the largest in Virginia in recent years and was reached following a failed mediation, two years of litigation, and numerous rulings on motions. While we take immense pride in securing a result like this, we are always reminded that, in many cases, there is no true "happy ending."
We spent hundreds of hours working closely with this family. They share a deep love for one another and find peace in the knowledge that, one day, they will be reunited with their husband and father. Still, his absence is profoundly felt at each wedding and with the birth of each new grandchild. While we often celebrate positive outcomes with our clients, this is a case we close with a sense of great poignancy.
